Balfour Beatty have also remodelled part of the existing school building, CNS were appointed by the Balfour Beatty Engineering Services division to assist in the design and fully implement a structured cabling infrastructure, diverse Fibre Optic cabling system within the new build and refurbished building.

The Brief

Oldham BSF – North Chadderton School Project
CNS were approached by Balfour Beatty Engineering Services to install a full structured cabling, fibre optic cabling infrastructure system and IAWB infrastructure within a proposed new build and part refurbished school, this challenging but rewarding project was given to CNS after carrying out similar projects on other

The Project

The North Chadderton School BSF project threw up many design challenges for our projects team as the new build was proposed to be built whilst maintaining a section of the existing building in order to keep the school as a live teaching environment, this meant version changes to design at the early stages of the project to allow for existing hub rooms to be kept live until phased completions. Once the final design had been agreed CNS carried out the following on site to full completion over 3 phased project durations.

  1. Installation of an Excel Cat6 structured cabling system over 3 phases within new build and refurbished areas. A total of 2,105 outlets for Voice, Data, CCTV, Wi-Fi and Televisions. All cables installed on high level cable basket and neatly loomed in bundles of 48 throughout the floors.
  2. Installation of a diverse Fibre optic cable system.
  3. Cat6 & Fibre Optic cable termination and testing.
  4. Installation of free standing network cabinets within 4 x Hub rooms.
  5. IPTV infrastructure.
  6. IAWB installations to all classrooms.
  7. Project management which included:
  • Labour Control
  • Health & Safety Coordination, Risk Assessment and
  • Method Statement
  • On site meetings
  • Safe site storage
  • Material logistics
  • Access & Plant
  • Waste management control
  1. Working at heights & Asbestos Awareness (trained operatives).
  2. Full comprehensive documentation and “as fitted” CAD drawings.

Conclusion (Phases 1&2)

  • Provision of a robust Cat6 and Fibre Optic cabling infrastructure
  • Cost effective high bandwidth to cope with user demands
  • Environmentally friendly infrastructure
  • Infrastructure implemented with minimum disruption to a live school environment
