The Manchester new Hospitals development on the site of the Manchester Royal Infirmary is the largest single Healthcare investment ever in Europe with the largest Woman’s and Children’s hospitals outside of America. The scheme has created five new state of the art hospitals: Women’s, Eye, Adult, Children’s and provision for Mental Health users.

The building project commenced in 2005 and included 15 new buildings where more than 1 Million patients are treated every year. The five specialist hospitals are home to hundreds of world class clinicians and academic staff committed to delivering very high quality care.

Complete Network Services were awarded 7 year contract to maintain the onsite Mitel Telephony equipment and the structured cabling, Blown and traditional fibre cabling infrastructure across the whole site campus including retained, non-retained and PFI buildings.

CNS have a permanent on site engineering presence to take care of all moves/adds/changes and installation and maintenance of services and also provide 24×7 cover.

What we cover on site

  • Mitel system support with 2 x resident Telecom system engineers.
  • IP Voice DECT system.
  • All new Voice, Data and Fibre optical cabling installations with 2 x resident cabling engineers.
  • Site wide Wi-Fi surveying, cabling infrastructure and Provision and Installation of Cisco WAP devices.
  • Maintenance of over 40,000 structured cabling outlets.
  • Maintenance of resilient Blown Fibre infrastructure and Traditional Fibre cabling infrastructure.
  • Maintenance of site wide Voice back bone cabling.

Having worked on site since 2006, CNS operatives have carried out many projects from day to day structured cabling installs (small works) to large scale cabling installations as part of scheme works carried out on site, we have adapted ourselves to work with many appointed building contractors and facilities management companies based on site including:

  • Sodexo FM.
  • Lend Lease FM.
  • Lend Lease PM&C.
  • Balfour Beatty.
  • Piggott & Whitfield

CNS have carried out large scale technical installations since being awarded the contract and as a nominated installer to the Trust, CNS have been involved in all cabling installations across the campus, allowing for continuity and peace of mind to the Trust that they receive the highest standards of cabling installations with the same committed site based engineers.

The Brief

New Build Wi-Fi Project

In 2012 CNS were approached by Lend Lease FM working on behalf of the Trust at the MRI to design, supply and install a Wi-Fi system within the new build, Lend Lease FM wanted a cost-effective structured cabling system capable of supporting an eventual site wide Wi-Fi infrastructure. Lend Lease FM appointed CNS as nominated and preferred installer due to our Achilles Building confidence accreditation coupled with our site knowledge and experience working with NHS Trusts, Lend Lease felt CNS were best placed to carry out this project.

The Project

The project consisted of carrying out site wireless surveys in all building across the campus, once the surveys were complete this enabled us to assist with the design element which was completed and presented to the Trust for approval, once approval was given we had the responsibility to assign a Cisco reseller partner to procure all the Cisco equipment, this was carried out by our projects team with minimum fuss and delivered to site in stages to tie in with the Phased contracts of the project, the cabling element of this project has consisted of CNS supplying 4 x teams of cabling Installation engineers to install a Brand Rex Cat6 infrastructure to over 1,000 locations across the sites new builds.

CNS have successfully installed and signed off Phases 1 & 2 of this project and presented Lend Lease FM with a full set of As fitted CAD drawings and 4 x copies of O&M manuals to be distributed to the Trust, Catalyst and Sodexo, the project was carried out in time and to budget and most importantly to specification, the preferred material suppliers for the cabling solution was Brand Rex and the Wi-Fi infrastructure was up to date Cisco products.

Phases 1 & 2 of the Wi-Fi project were completed by the end of April 2013, it was announced in Sept 2012 that CNS have also been awarded the 3rd phase contract to install Wi-Fi to the rest of the Campus – works due to commence February 2014.

Conclusion

  • Provision of a robust Cat6 cabling infrastructure.
  • Cost effective high bandwidth to cope with user demands.
  • Environmentally friendly infrastructure.
  • Infrastructure implemented with minimum disruption to a very busy campus.
